[edit] Concerns re neutrality of category of "Spain"
I would like to raise some concerns about the neutrality of the category of "Spain" and "Spanish" in light of cultural/national pluralism on the Iberian peninsula. The Spanish nation is relatively recent and its sovereignty is contested. Nothing and no one before the 15th century can be accurately attributed to Spain and many members of autonomous communities today either do not consider themselves Spanish at all or only as a secondary or administrative designation. "Iberian" is a more neutral designation, referring to a geographic scope rather than the projects of nationalism, whether by the Spanish state or members of autonomous communities. Recapitulating the project of the Franco dictatorship to unify Spain under Castilian norms (in his case by cultural genocide) serves the political agenda of the Partido Popular and is therefore not impartial. "Iberian" recognizes the plural ways of life within the borders of modern Spain without privileging one group over another. For example, one in five citizens of Spain speak an Iberian mother tongue other than Castilian. Thus there is no such thing as "the Spanish language" but rather Castilian, Catalan, Euskara, Galician, Aragonese, Aranese, etc. as Iberian languages (which of course includes Portuguese). "Spain" and "Spanish" should be used to refer to aspects of the nation state, citizenship, etc, but not to cultural practices. Sangderuc (talk) 00:08, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Sangderuc
- However recent the Spanish "nation" may be, the Spanish empire or kingdom dates from the years of the Reconquista, or possibly earlier (i.e. the Visigothic kingdoms preceding Muslim rule). The question is -- at what point did some, if not all, begin to see Iberia as a region that had a common cultural or political heritage and destiny? IMHO, this point clearly passed more than 1,000 years ago. Spain is not defined by simple geography, as is Iberia. Spain is a tradition dating back to Pelayo (an Asturian!); Spain is an empire that ruled much of the Americas; Spain is, if not in your opinion a going concern, at least a historical fact. Independence-minded people in specific Spanish regions share one thing in common with Franco and his ilk: the mistaken belief that "Spanish" and "Castilian" are synonyms. They are not. The latter is a subset of the former, and the former implies pluralism, just like "British" and "German" and "Italian" do. One does not have to believe in centralized government, Castilian superiority or "cultural genocide" to acknowledge that the various peoples of the Iberian Peninsula, excepting (sometimes) Portugal, are, despite their individual identities, tied together by cultural and historical threads stronger than those that bind them to the rest of Europe, or to the world at large; and the generally accepted term for those cultural and political bands is "Spain". ``` W i k i W i s t a h ``` 01:36, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Request for assistance: hare coursing
The article hare coursing includes the following at hare coursing#In other countries:
- "According to the UK Government's Burns Inquiry[9], open coursing (UK style) takes place in Spain and park coursing (Irish style) takes place in Portugal. Coursing also takes place in Pakistan. Hare coursing is illegal in most other European countries.[17]"
Can anyone in this wikiproject find any sources describing the existence, notability or debate of hare coursing in Spain? (perhaps better known as hunting hares with galgos not guns). Thank you. MikeHobday (talk) 11:55, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Is "These islands claimed by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa for the crown of Castile and León from the year 1568 are the Jesus Islands, commonly called the Solomon Islands" an accurate translation?

[edit] Bachillerato
Hi all -- I'm translating an article from the Spanish Wikipedia and I'm trying to figure out which page to link the concept of Bachillerato. The Spanish wiki page's interwiki link goes to the Baccalaureate disambiguation page. Is there a page that covers the specifics of the Bachillerato and what it entails? I read over the article on the European Baccalaureate for EU member states, but it doesn't seem to be right. --Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû 07:55, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Problems with Ataúlfo Argenta
I just came across this article which is definitely not in compliance with verifiability. It is full of original research and the repetition of rumours verging on slander. It has been the subject of persistent attempts by the single purpose account Tilleadh to revert the removal of the unsourced, unverifiable, and potentially biased information. The subject died 50 years ago (although his son is still alive). It could use some expert attention. Many thanks. Voceditenore (talk) 12:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] National Library of Catalonia
The short article about the National Library of Catalonia was created after Biblioteca de Catalunya, which already existed. The two articles should be merged, but which one should remain -- A or B?
- A -- Biblioteca de Catalunya --> National Library of Catalonia?
- B -- National Library of Catalonia --> Biblioteca de Catalunya?
If there is no objection, the resulting choice will likely become A -- and the Catalan-entitled article will be folded into National Library of Catalonia at the end of April. Are there any objections? --Tenmei (talk) 14:06, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Catalan language
Cross-posting to Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance), Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spain, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Catalan-speaking Countries
Template:Catalan language has been tagged for speedy deletion, using a template that (as I understand it) is supposed to indicate what should be used instead; no template is indicated to be used instead. I had some back and forth with User:MZMcBride, who tagged it, but I'm afraid that all that revealed is that he and I aren't seeing eye-to-eye.
I haven't been working in Catalan language and culture lately, but this template was once quite heavily used. We created it because there were articles where {{Catalan-speaking world}} was arguably too extensive. Not to put too fine a point on it, Spanish nationalists objected (reasonably, I think) to articles about topics like phonology linking (via that template) to articles about Catalan government agencies, Christmas traditions, etc.. I suspect that what has happened over time someone (probably a Catalan nationalist) has put {{Catalan-speaking world}} back on the contentious articles, and that the template that is now proposed for deletion might be more appropriate on those articles.
But, since he doesn't even say what template he considers to be an acceptable substitute, I feel like I'm wrestling with a fog. Perhaps someone else can do a better job of sorting this out. - Jmabel | Talk 19:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Requesting assistance on Lope de Vega article
Greetings, members of WikiProject Spain! I'm putting out a request for any interested members of the Spain, Theatre, and/or Biography (Arts and Entertainment) Projects to provide some assistance with the article on Lope de Vega. The tone of the much of the text still seems to be from the 1911 Britannica; I believe the article could benefit from the incorporation of material from some additional references, along with the documentation of those references on the article page. "Lope" is definitely a notable figure, with articles listed at 29 "Other Language" interwikis, as of 6 April 2008, and listed as a Featured-Article on Spanish Wikipedia. There should be no shortage of references available :)
I'm requesting assistance at this time, because another editor recently (in my opinion mistakenly and/or inappropriately) deleted much of the article text as being in violation of Wikipedia:Verifiability; I believe this should not have happened, and as of 6 April have restored the deleted text; but the occurence does underscore the fact that the article could use some updating and improved referencing; hopefully by a collaboration of editors.
Thanks, Lini (talk) 02:23, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! [edit] Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Spain
Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! [edit] Image needs replacement - Foz-Calanda
Hello all...
An image used in the article, specifically Image:Foz 1001.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

[edit] Spain-related articles needing geographical coordinates
Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles, I've found some Spain-related articles that I believe are about places, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.
The articles in question are listed in Category:Spain articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:
...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 1221 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.
[edit] Why add coordinates?
By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.
[edit] How can I do it?
The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Please let me know if this is useful, or if you have any questions! -- The Anome (talk) 09:15, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Manuel de Godoy de Bassano y Crowe
Just a heads up here: I found a new article created on 4 November 2008 by Fjmoralesroca with the rather convoluted title: Manuel de Godoy de Bassano y Crowe (*Paris, October 31, 1828 +April 14, 1896), 3rd Prince of Godoy of Bassano, 3rd Count of Castillo Fiel. It consisted solely of random, unformatted, unreferenced text and appears to refer to the same person as the subject of Manuel de Godoy di Bassano y Crowe, 3rd Prince of Godoy of Bassano. I redirected it to the pre-existing article and copied the text of the new one to Talk:Manuel de Godoy di Bassano y Crowe, 3rd Prince of Godoy of Bassano in case it might prove useful to those trying to expand the article. I also put the {{WPBiography}} (WikiProject Royalty) and {{WikiProject Spain}} banners on it. [edit] Problems with stub templates for Spanish regions
Hi all -
there have been some problems recently with a few stub templates relating to Spanish regions. A stub template for the Canary Islands ({{CanaryIslands-geo-stub}}) was upmerged to the main Spain geography stub category, even though they were big enough for their own categories (which is, of course, a subcategory of the Spanish national equivalent). Similarly, generic and geo stub types for Spain's Plazas de soberanía were turned into redirects to the equivalent Spanish national templates. In this case, this didn't remove articles from specific Plaza de soberanía subcategories, as the templates were upmerged. The templates were, however, doubly-upmerged, and though the articles remained in the Spanish stub categories, they disappeared from the equivalent North African ones. The editors who did this were anon IP editors.
Also, at some point earlier this year a large number of spanish regional stub templates were converted from the standard boilerplate text to use the asbox template. The asbox template was only ever an experiment, intended to be used on just one or two stub types. As it happens, asbox was largely abandoned as a system for making stub templates, since it proved to be less useful than the former coding. Again, the editors whoi did this were at anon IPs - ones in the same range as the recent changed (a series of IPs indicating the location was in Spain).
It seems very likely that the anons involved may be regular contributors to the Spanish language Wikipedia. If anyone here has any idea who they may be, please can you gently tell them that the changes are not appreciated. In the case of the changes to the Canary islands stubs, the very slow server queue in recent times means that null edits were necessary to get all the articles back in the right category - something I've just spent the last three quarters of an hour doing. A tiny template change can take a long time to undo... Grutness...wha? 08:38, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Personal Names question
Sorry guys, is there a way to know if a person was born with a Spanish name or a regional name or a combination of both? I mean, e.g., ... Ricardo Zamora Martínez or Ricard Zamora i Martínez or Ricard Zamora Martínez; Xabier Alonso Olano or Javier Alonso Olano or Xabier Alontso Olano... --necronudist (talk) 13:13, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Given Names can be changed to any language as for example: Miguel, Miquel and Mikel.... or Eugenio, Uxio, Eugeni... depending on the use given by the person, it is even legal to change from one name to the other in the registry. On the Other hands surnames are not change whatsoever (at least in this times) thus you can find someone called Miguel Echevarria (Correct Basque Etxeberria) going to live to the Basque Country and just changing his name to Mikel Echevarria.
[edit] Article alerts
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

[edit] Asturian language name
I've noticed that some users have removed the Asturian language name from Asturian geo articles. Examples include: Besullo (Allande), Gedrez, Prahúa, etc. Is it inappropriate to include it within the article, especially when the Asturian language wikipedia article spells the place name differently than the English language and Spanish language wiki articles? --Rosiestep (talk) 23:06, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- I would say it's completely appropriate to add it since that's a local name and Astur-Leonese has some degree of legal recognition in the relevant communities. Valenciano (talk) 22:18, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Valencia historical trains/trams
I have uploaded several scanned slides on the regional meter gauge trains around Valencia. These pictures where taken in 1981 and 1987. See (Commons:Category:Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana). These pics where taken partly in the FEVE period. (With the FEVE logos) There are several issues:
- These where taken at the narrow gauge station on the North side off the city. I dont know the name of it. Now the trams make a U-turn at the same location.
- I dont know anything about these types of train. A description would be usefull. Some may even be from pre FEVE times.
- I dont know any Spanish, but a Spanish description would be usefull.
-
- I added some links to pictures in the Spanish Wiki article. Maybe this will trigger some action from our Spanish friends.
- The Category is unclear: Does the "FGV" refer to railway company running these trains now -or- To the railways in the Generalitat Valencia? In the first case I would put these pictures under the FEVE category (and maybe create a FEVE subcategory) In the second case I can leave things as now.
-
- I created a new cat "FEVE rail in Generalitat Valencia" for the pictures from that period.

- The station at the tram loop is now Pont de Fusta (would translate as Wooden Bridge) but would have been 'Valencia Central' then. FGV runs all the railways in the Generalitat - that includes the tram in Alicante. Valenciano (talk) 17:58, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

I will request a change of username. Congratulations for the nice work, keep it up my friends! (qwerty (talk) 04:24, 29 April 2009 (UTC))
[edit] Roman Catholicism in Spain and History of Roman Catholicism in Spain
I'd like to draw your attention to these two articles. Roman Catholicism in Spain has existed for some time but is rather anemic and could use some expansion. History of Roman Catholicism in Spain is a new article that I have just created. I invite you to look at it and improve it or leave comments for further improvement at Talk:History of Roman Catholicism in Spain. Muchas gracias.

[edit] GA Sweeps invitation
This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.
We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.
If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing!
