Tyne-Tees derby

The Tyne-Tees derby (also known as the North East derby) is a term which is often applied to matches between Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

Although often billed as a derby by the media, many people in Newcastle dispute that this is the case. Many Newcastle fans feel that a match against a team 34 miles away does not qualify as a local derby, and believe that Newcastle's only derby is the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland. Many Middlesbrough fans also think the Tees-Wear derby is a more important game than the Tyne-Tees derby which makes this a secondary derby to both clubs. A 2004 poll of fans^[1] seems to confirm this, showing that Middlesbrough fans regard Newcastle as their biggest rivals, whilst Newcastle fans only regard Middlesbrough as their 3rd largest rivals (behind Sunderland and Manchester United).

Some of the derbys were shown live during the 1990s as part of the North East Match programme on the local ITV region, Tyne Tees Television.
