Philip II Arena (Macedonian: Национална арена "Филип II Македонски", Nacionalna Arena "Filip II Makedonski") is a multi-purpose stadium in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. It is currently used mostly for football matches, but sometimes music concerts and other events take place too. It is the home stadium of FK Rabotnički and FK Vardar from Skopje, both of which compete in the Macedonian First League, as well as the home ground of the Republic of Macedonia national football team on almost all occasions (the other venues rarely chosen being the Goce Delčev Stadium in Prilep, or SRC Biljanini Izvori in Ohrid).
[edit] Reconstruction and expansion
The stadium is currently undergoing mass reconstruction works, with the north stand being completely redesigned and significantly expanded (planned to be completed by August 2009), after which the construction of the new western and eastern stands is scheduled to follow. Total capacity when completed is projected at 33,000[1]. The stadium is expected to be completely redesigned till 2011.[2]
[edit] Name
Before the name change in February 2009[3][4] the stadium was known as the Skopje City Stadium (Macedonian: Градски стадион Скопје, Gradski stadion Skopje), thence its nickname "Gradski".
