League positions for Ipswich Town & Norwich City; main claimants to the title

The title is claimed for winning the East Anglian derby and/or for finishing highest in the league.

[edit] East Anglian derby

The main rivals are Ipswich Town and Norwich City. Other professional clubs in the region include Colchester United, Southend United, Peterborough United and Cambridge United.

When Norwich and Ipswich meet it is known as the 'East Anglian derby'.[1] Over the 134 matches played between Norwich and Ipswich since 1902, Ipswich boasts the better record, having won 45% of the matches to Norwich's 37%.[2] The most recent encounter ended in a 3–2 win for Ipswich at Portman Road on 19 April 2009.

[edit] League Position

Another commonly employed measure for "Pride of Anglia", and one that encompasses all of the East Anglian teams, is the side finishing as the highest placed East Anglian team in the Football League.[3] In 2006-07 this honour belonged to Colchester United, who finished tenth overall in the Championship, above Ipswich Town, in 14th position, and Norwich City in 16th.[4] When it was confirmed that Colchester could not be overtaken in the league by any of their East Anglian rivals, the club was awarded a special "Pride of Anglia" trophy by Anglia Television. In 2007-08 Ipswich Town regained the title of Pride of Anglia by finishing 8th in the league table.[5]
