The Selected picture box on the portal chooses one of the following at random when displaying the page. Follow the instructions below for adding or nominating a new picture to the list.
This format replaced the old "Featured picture" box in December 2007, the previous version is archived.

Football related Featured pictures from Wikipedia or Commons can be added directly to this list without nomination. All other images should be nominated first to ensure that we only display our best work on the portal. The procedure for nomination is at the bottom of this page.

- Click on the next successive empty entry or red link from this page.
- Paste the above layout template if it isn't already there.
- Add a free image and caption.
- Add the credit line for the author with a wikilink or external link to their profile if possible.
- Write two or three sentences in the text field using information about the picture and it's subject, you may find it useful to examine the existing entries for an idea of the length required.
- Ensure the main subject of the image is in bold and add this same article to the link field.
- Preview the page.
- Save the page.
- Go to the main Portal:Association football page.
- Click on edit page.
- Update "max=" to its new total for the {{Random portal component}} on the main page. A group of supporters (Ultras) of Italian team Inter Milan create a display in the San Siro. The ground, which they share with rivals A.C. Milan, has the largest capacity in Italian football after it's 1989 renovation in preparation for Italia '90.

The Sheffield F.C. team in 1890. Sheffield F.C. are regarded as the oldest football club in the world and were awarded the FIFA Order of Merit in 2004 to reflect this. The amateur team played Inter Milan in 2007 to celebrate their 150th anniversary at Bramall Lane with Pele as the guest of honour.

Flowers and tributes left at in memoriam of Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foé at Maine Road, home of his former club Manchester City. Foé collapsed in the 71st minute of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup semifinal between Cameroon and Columbia and later died. Many of his former clubs created memorials in his honour, with Manchester City retiring the number 23 shirt.

A player for FK Austria Wien is shown a Yellow Card for fouling an opponent of FC Red Bull Salzburg. The Referee may caution the player by showing them a yellow card if they feel a player is guilty of misconduct or is acting in contravention of the Laws of the Game. Severe fouls may result in a player being shown a Red Card and being sent off of the field of play.

The illuminated exterior of the Allianz Arena in Germany. Completed in 2005 at a cost of €340 million, it is now the home ground of Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 München. Nicknamed the "Schlauchboot" (inflatable boat), it's exterior is constructed of 2,874 foil air panels which are inflated with dry air. These panels can be individually lit with either red, blue or white lights.

2005 UEFA Women's Cup winners 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam parade with the cup after beating Swedish club Djurgården/Älvsjö 5-1 over two legs. Potsdam went on to appear as losing finalists in the competition the following season.

A helicopter lands at the Feijenoord Stadion, home of Feyenoord. The club holds an open day during the pre-season build-up which attracts up to 70,000 fans annually, the highlight of which is the flying in of newly signed players to be introduced to the supporters.

On June 2, 1962, Chile played Italy in the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Known as The Battle of Santiago, it is derided as one of the most violent games of football ever. The first foul occurred after 12 seconds and Italy's Giorgio Ferrini was sent off in the twelfth minute after a foul on Honorino Landa. In the violence that followed, Leonel Sánchez broke Italian captain Humberto Maschio's nose with a left hook by accident. Chile won the match 2-0.

Brazil was chosen as the host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on October 30, 2007. FIFA president Joseph Blatter's selection gave Brazil the honour of hosting the competition for a second time and it will be the first World Cup tournament to be held in South America since Argentina hosted in 1978.

2007 FIFA World Player of the Year nominee Christiane controls the ball during the 2007 Pan American Games Gold Match. Brazil beat the United States 5-0 to win the competition for the second time.

Appearing in the World Cup for the first time, Ghana came second in Group E of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and were beaten in the Round of 16 by Brazil. Their group wins over the Czech Republic (pictured) and the United States were one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.

Association football has many variants including Beach soccer. Historically popular in Brazil, the rules for the sport were codified by Beach Soccer Worldwide in 1992. Today, national teams from all confederations compete in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

The opening ceremony for the 2006 FA Cup Final between Liverpool and West Ham. This was the 125th time the trophy was contested and the last time the final was held in the Millennium Stadium before returning to Wembley for 2007. The score was 3-3 after extra time and the game was ended with a penalty shootout in which Liverpool won the cup for the seventh time in their history.

The sport of Association football has been played at the Summer Olympic Games since 1896. An unofficial event until the 1908 London Olympics, teams have participated for medals in every event since with one exception. In 1932, FIFA prevented the playing of football at the 1932 Summer Olympics due to the perception that it may overshadow the newly created FIFA World Cup competition. It was an amateur event until 1984, when the IOC admitted professional players for the first time in order to boost popularity and Women's football was added to the program in 1996.

As part of the Paralympic games, Paralympic football is played by athletes with disabilities. The games use the majority of the FIFA Laws of the Game with alterations to the field of play, equipment, numbers of players, and other rules as required to make the game suitable for the athletes. The two most prominent versions of Paralympic football are Football 5-a-side, for athletes with visual impairments, and Football 7-a-side, for athletes with cerebral palsy.

The term street football encompasses a wide variety of informal games that are loosely based on association football but do not necessarily enforce all, or indeed any, of the Laws of the Game. Often the most basic of set-ups will involve just a ball with a wall or fence used as a goal, or items such as clothing being used for goalposts. The ease of playing these informal games means that they are popular all over the world.

La Selección, as the team is known locally, have won the World Cup on two occasions and the Copa América fourteen times. An Association football pitch is usually traditionally covered in grass. Much investment is made on the playing surfaces in larger clubs, with some importing specialist seeds and turf from European countries and each club employing a groundsman to keep it in good condition for playing. The game is also played on artificial turf at a professional level in some countries.

- My apologies for taking so long (months!) to respond to both of these...
- Whilst it's a nice action shot of Fabregas, the blurriness of the ball and the fact that Anderson is half hidden dissuades me from adding it right now. However, if there was an article on "obstruction" or something along those lines it'd be a worthwhile illustration of the techniques.
- Also, there are entries for Fabregas, Arsenal & Manchester United on the portal already. Nanonic (talk) 20:04, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
