[edit] History
The Company was first established in 1967 as a business unit of Anglo American plc to build and operate the Merebank Mill in Durban in South Africa.[1] Mondi came to Europe in the early 1990s acquiring 49% of the Austrian business Neusiedler AG in 1990[2] and 40% of the Austrian business Frantschach AG shortly thereafter.[2] In 1997 it went on to buy 60% of the Polish business Celuoza Swiegie AG.[2]
In 1997 it also bought a 19.4% stake in Russia’s Syktyvkar Mill.[3]
In 2000 the Company increased its holdings in Neusiedler AG and Frantschach AG to 100% and 70% respectively.[4] Also in 2000 it acquired Cofinec, another Polish business.[4] It increased its holding in the Syktyvar Mill to 90% in 2002.[4]
In 2004 it further increased its holdings in Frantschach AG to 100% and in Celuloza Swiegie AG to 71%.[4]
On 2 July 2007 the Company demerged from its former parent company Anglo American plc, turning into a dual-listed company with primary listings in both Johannesburg and London reflecting the fact that while the majority of the Company's business is in Europe it also has a South African heritage and significant ongoing operations there.[5]
