[edit] Elected by the Whole House
The following peers were elected to serve as Deputy Speakers of the House of Lords. They were elected by the whole House (i.e. all Peers who had taken the oath of allegiance) under House of Lords Standing Order 9. All by-elections to vacancies in these groups will be filled by an election amongst all sitting members of the House of Lords (including life peers), but not hereditary peers outside the House.

[edit] Elected from the Cross-bench hereditary peers
These peers are elected in the same way as Conservative hereditary peers. The provisions of the House of Lords Act 1999 allowed for "runners-up" in the original election of peers to take a seat in the House of Lords if another hereditary peer died before the end of first session of the next Parliament after its passage (i.e. late 2001); This was the only group of hereditary peers where this provision was invoked with two peers being replaced under it (Barons Cobbold and Chorley were the succeeding peers).
