Joel Alan Byrom (born 14 September 1986) is an English professional footballer who plays for Stevenage Borough as an attacking midfielder.

[edit] Career

Born in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, Byrom started his career at Blackburn Rovers after being spotted playing for local junior side Oswaldtwistle United. He graduated into the Reserve side at Ewood Park before being released in the summer of 2006.

He was signed by Football League Two side Accrington Stanley on 1 August 2006 after showing good potential whilst on trial. His first game for Stanley was in the Football League Trophy when he started in the win against Carlisle United on 17 October 2006. He found it hard to get into the first team and only made one League appearance as a substitute in the 3–3 draw with Shrewsbury Town on 2 December 2006. He was released by Stanley at the start of the transfer window on 1 January 2007.

He then signed for Northern Premier League First Division side Clitheroe in January 2007. His league debut came in the 1–0 loss to Brigg Town on 20 January 2007 and he finished his first season well for the Blues and finished top scorer with 11 league goals. However, his contract expired and he became a free agent again. This alerted Conference North side Southport who took him on non-contract terms for the start of the 2007–08 season where he scored 2 goals in 2 games. He got offered a contract at the Sandgrounders but decided to go back to Clitheroe. In his second season for Clitheroe he scored 9 goals in all competitions which caught the attention of Conference National team Northwich Victoria. He played his last game in the 3–3 draw with local rivals Rossendale United where he was the captain for the first time.

On 1 January 2008 Northwich offered an undisclosed fee believed to be around four figures which was accepted by Clitheroe. The transfer was completed on 2 January 2008. His first League game for the Vics came in the 2–1 loss to Aldershot Town where he scored on his debut.

On 15 May 2009 Stevenage Borough confirmed the signing of Byrom for a fee of £15,000.[1]
