[edit] Biography
[edit] Early life
James Thomas Denton, Jr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in nearby Goodlettsville. His father, J.T. Denton (1930-1993), was a dentist who had served in the military.[1] His mother, Mary Jean Woolslair Denton, died from breast cancer in 2002.
Denton attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, majored in television/journalism and earned a degree in advertising. Before he became an actor, he sold advertising for two radio stations. He began acting at the age of 23, at a community theater in Nashville. He eventually moved to California to become a full time actor.
[edit] Career
He has been a regular cast member on the television show Desperate Housewives, where he plays the role of Mike Delfino, a plumber who lives on Wisteria Lane and ex-husband of Susan Delfino for five seasons now. He had previously been a regular on several television series, including the movie Australia, The Pretender, JAG, Philly, The Drew Carey Show, Reba and Threat Matrix. Although "Threat Matrix" held its own in one of the worst time-slots of the season (sandwiched between the last season of “Friends” and Survivor), ABC nonetheless pulled the series after only fourteen episodes aired (sixteen episodes were filmed). "Threat Matrix" was officially cancelled on the same day as Jamie’s role as "Mike Delfino" on "Desperate Housewives", a new ABC series scheduled for the Fall, was announced at the 2004 upfronts in New York. As well he has guested on Sliders, Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, Ally McBeal and The West Wing.
He appeared in several movies, three of which are Primary Colors, That Old Feeling, and Face/Off, as well as appearing in the TV movie Custody which aired in September 2007.
In 2009, James Denton represents the image of Serengeti Sunglasses brand.[2]
[edit] Personal life
Denton has been married twice. He and his first wife, Jenna Lyn Ward, an actress, were married from 1997 to 2000. He married for the second time on December 16, 2002 to Erin O'Brien. He and Erin have two children: a son named Sheppard (b. March 2003) and a daughter, Malin O'Brien (b. March 22, 2005). In the 2006 special "CMT Giants: Reba" he revealed that Reba McEntire gave his daughter an heirloom quilt for her birth. He is known to be a Houston Astros baseball fan and often attends games. He is also part of the owners group of an independent minor league baseball team in Fullerton, the Orange County Flyers, part of the Golden Baseball League, who in 2008 won the GBL Championship. He is at almost all of the games, cheering his team on. The Orange County Flyers play at Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, California.
[edit] Politics
Denton endorsed Democrat John Edwards for President in 2004 and 2008. He traveled to Iowa in the fall of 2007 to campaign with Edwards' daughter, Cate.[citation needed]
