The Foochowese people are a subgroup of the Han people (also known as the ethnic Chinese). They are a Min-speaking group, who speak Foochowese language and are native to Foochow region and adjacent Gutian County and Pingnan County, in the Fujian province of the People's Republic of China. There is also a significant overseas Foochowese population, particularly distributed in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, United States, Japan, United Kingdom, etc.[1]
They are referred to as "Hockchiu" in Malaysia.[2]
