[edit] Club career
Montenegro began his professional career at Club Atlético Huracán in 1997; he went to represent Club Atlético Independiente (on three different spells, teaming up with sibling Ariel in the first), Olympique de Marseille (who loaned him three times during his contract, namely to Spanish outfits), FC Saturn Moscow Oblast in Russia, and Club Atlético River Plate (two stints).
His goal scoring record for Independiente is very impressive with 40 goals in 104 matches from midfield.
In 2006, Montenegro re-joined Independiente for a third time, often acting as team captain. He has been linked with a move back to Europe and in June 2009 it was reported that two unnamed English Premiership Clubs were interested in signing him.
[edit] International career
Montenegro represented the Argentina Under-20 team at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, and made his full international debut against Chile, on April 18, 2007.
He was called up again late in the following year (November 19, 2008) for a friendly against Scotland, with the national side now coached by Diego Maradona.
