CBC News: Compass is a 60-minute news program based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada that airs at 6:00PM AST on CBCT, the CBC owned and operated television station on PEI.
The newscast launched as Compass in 1986, with Roger Younker as its anchor from its inception until 2002. Younker became a well-known and trusted celebrity within Prince Edward Island. The humorous and popular weatherman, Kevin "Boomer" Gallant, has also been with the program since 1986, and still remains.
In 2000, as a result of budget-cuts, Compass was cut to a 30-minute segment and retitled to CBC News: Canada Now, with a national news segment following at 6:30PM local time, presented by Ian Hanomansing from the network's Vancouver studios. In 2002, with Younker's departure, long-time substitute host and correspondent Sara Fraser became the anchor replacement. In 2003, newcomer Bruce Rainnie was brought in as a permanent replacement for Younker/Fraser as the anchor, and brought his own unique style to the program. Sara Fraser, formerly a co-host, continues as a substitute anchor and correspondent as of current. In May 2006, the title of the program was again changed, from CBC News: Canada Now to CBC News at Six: Prince Edward Island.
The program returned to its 60-minute run on 19 February 2007, with local news in the first 30 minutes, and national and international news in the second half-hour. The title of the program was also changed back to the original CBC News: Compass. The 30-minute Ian Hanomansing national broadcast has been discontinued.
In October 2008, the program won a Gemini award for its coverage of a major ice storm earlier that year.
