[edit] Club career
After finishing in second with Stuttgart in 2002-03, and already established as first-choice, Hinkel took part in UEFA Champions League for the first time in his career. In March 2004, however, he suffered a knee ligament injury.
On June 23, 2006, Hinkel signed a 4-year contract with Sevilla FC. The transfer fee was estimated to be around €4 million. With Sevilla FC he won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Unable to dislodge perennial right-back Daniel Alves, on January 4, 2008, he was confirmed as Scottish giants Celtic F.C.'s new signing, for a fee of £1.9 million.[1][2] Hinkel played his first Celtic game during the club's 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Stirling Albion eight days later, and would score his first goal for Celtic a month later, in the 3-0 win over Hearts at Celtic Park on February 16.
[edit] International career
Hinkel has represented his country on 18 occasions at senior level, making his debut in 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro. He was part of the German squad during Euro 2004 (having recovered from aforementioned knee injury), but missed the 2006 World Cup. Hinkel's international involvement was kept to a minimum when at Seville due to lack of first team football but, after a string of impressive performances for Celtic, he made a return to the German squad in September 2008 and he continues to be considered a valuable part of the first team.
