- Bjørg Vik, writer, playwright and journalist, is awarded the Ibsen Prize drama award.
- Burzum, the musical project by black metal musician Varg Vikernes is begun. This was going to be at the core of the early Norwegian black metal scene.
- Christian black metal band Antestor release their debut demo The Defeat of Satan which has been credited for starting the whole northern European Christian extreme metal scene.[1]
